Harvey Elliot: The Forgotten Man

With the latest announcement of Gareth Southgate's England squad, we have seen many young talents being allowed to potentially represent their country at senior level for the first time, including the impressive Kobbie Mainoo at Manchester United.

The news has divided fans and sparked debate between fans of the big six regarding whose young talents should be in the England squad for the upcoming friendlies and who should be on the plane for the Euros in the summer.

No doubt the 18-year-old has been a revelation at Manchester United this season but there seems to be a player that has gone unnoticed by Gareth Southgate. Harvey Elliot, the young man who has been excellent for the Reds thus far and has stepped up massively during Liverpool's injury crisis in recent months.

Unbelievably, the 20-year-old was considered one of the more senior players on the pitch in the Merseyside Reds' incredible 1-0 Carabao Cup Final win against Chelsea late last month.

The Englishmen has established himself as a starter under Jurgen Klopp and his work rate and pressing is next to none. Furthermore, he has popped up with important goals for the Reds, more memorably, his late goal against Crystal Palace earlier in the campaign.

The 20-year-old has been a fantastic asset to Jurgen Klopp's midfield, with 8.06 progressive passes and 4.35 shot-creating actions per 90. Compared to Kobbie Mainoo, who has 2.74 progressive passes and 1.64 shot-creating actions per 90. However, Mainoo's position is slightly deeper than Elliot's, but the Liverpool midfielder's defensive work is really impressive. The former Fulham youngster has covered a massive 13.2km per 90 minutes, with no other player with five or more appearances running more.

The English international has also impressed for England's U21's and is arguably their best player. His wonder goal against Germany is just one of many moments of magic produced by the 20-year-old.

Elliot has really come into his own this season with huge praise from Jurgen Klopp on the young man "But it’s not a problem because he is young, he has time, and he will be there 100 percent. It is not that he will be for the rest of his career the super-sub or whatever the public calls him.” The Englishman has made 24 appearances thus far in the Premier League with two goals and six assists in all competitions.

Unfortunately, the 20-year-old has a lot of competition in his position at the international level with the likes of Phil Foden, James Maddison, Jack Grealish, and Jude Bellingham all competing to play in the attacking midfield spot for Gareth Southgate. The youngster has proven his importance for the Reds and is surely not far away from getting the call-up to St Georges Park.

Even if Elliot were to push out to the wing for England, something he's shown himself being capable of for Liverpool, he'd be unlikely to start over the likes of Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford.

Elliot has all the ability to be a superstar at club and international level. Gareth Southgate has a gem in the waiting and the young midfielder will be devastated to be left out of the squad in the upcoming friendlies. Especially with bitter rival Kobbie Mainoo earning a spot after just 14 appearances in the Premier League this season.

However, the young midfielder has done all he can to put himself in the running for the England squad, come the Euros in the summer.
