Vine Sends Australia To The Semi-Finals

An unbeaten France looked to continue their exceptional tournament form as they took on co-hosts Australia, another team looking to create history and advance past the quarter-finals for the first time.

The game would be close between both sides, both setup defensively, neutralising each other out for the full length of normal time, Australia would be acared in the first half of extra time with a Kennedy own-goal, the was fortunately ruled out by the referee.

Both sides would continue to create chances but ultimately couldn't create a final product which saw the game go to a dreaded penalty shootout and after twenty penalties Cortnee Vine would slot home the winning penalty to send Australia to the World Cup Semi-Final.

France began the game in the opening stages with much of the possession and eventually would give Australia their first scare as defender Alanna Kennedy would shank a clearance towards her own goal, gifting forward Diani the ball, which she would strike low and just wide of the post.

France would continue the pressure with a set of corners, the second of which gave France another chance to open the scoring Bacha's ball into the box wasn't headered clear, Le Sommer attempted a shot from near the penalty spot that scuffed across to Lakrar who side-footed the ball over the bar from two metres out.

Australia would show their first signs of frustration spilling out on the pitch as whatever Australia attempted, France looked to have an answer to it, with Raso recklessly smashing into Karachouci right in front of the benches, and Gorry planting a late tackle on Geyoro.

Australia was then given their first chance of the game, a free kick from forty metres out, which Catley curled an effort into the box, which Peyraud-Megnain just managed to get enough on the ball to clear it.

France would shortly after have an attacking chance of their own as Le Sommer would make a determined run towards the Australian box, with the veteran striking a powerful shot that was slightly deflected, which Arnold managed to parry the ball away.

Australia piled on pressure and seemed to start to find their rhythm at the end of the first half, but still couldn't find a clear chance to open up the scoring, unsettling goalkeeper Megnain.

Australia would have two good chances near the end of the half; the first would come to Mary Fowler, who was given an opportunity with an open goal which Almeida expertly blocked; Fowler would get another chance as the ball would perfectly drop to her, however, Megnain made her move of her line perfectly making a great save to parry the ball away.

France did dominate the majority of the first half; however, Mary Fowler created two of the better chances.

HT France 0-0 Australia

The second half began much brighter for Australia the momentum they had begun to build at the end of the first half continued, as Mary Fowler would have another opportunity to score, as a mismanaged French clearance would make its way to her, but a solid defence would deflect her shot out.

Chances would continue to come for Australia, but they could still not manage to convert any of their chances due to a stout French defence, with Megnain producing some superb saves to keep France in the game.

It became a completely different second half whilst both sides were still creating chances; momentum has shifted with Australia having the majority of possession and having more clear-cut chances and shots on target.

Despite the efforts of both side's attacking options, the second half was frantic, with both sides having chances up, and down the pitch; however, both had their defences to thank for the game staying level for ninety minutes, sending the game to added time.

In the first half of extra time France were awarded a corner despite the ball touching a French player last, and from this, the ball was whipped into the box and deflected into the net by Australia's Kennedy, but the goal was disallowed to Australia's relief as Reanard tugged on Foords shirt prior to the ball crossing the line, this was the biggest chance for either side, with nothing else coming from the first half.

France would begin the second half looking dangerous and on the front foot, Bacha found room to run down the left, finding Diani, whos shot was blocked, it then fell to Becho whos shot arrowed towards the top corner but was denied by the fingertips of Arnold to keep the game level.

Bacha would continue to cause havoc for Australia, this time Geyoro would be in support whos shot would be parried near the six yard box by Arnold, but it would be the outstreched leg of Kennedy to clear the ball and prevent an almost certain French goal.

France seemed to settle for penalties with Herve Renard bringing on second choice keeper Solene Durand and Eve Perisset to replace Almeida, and both defences would continue to neutralise each other, ultimately sending the game to penalties to decide the winner.
