Player of the Month: January Nominations
The WSL was back on the 14th of January after having a month off for Christmas break and it came back with a bang.
So much talent has been displayed, so far this year in the WSL and a lot of talent has been showcased. 8 players have been nominated for January’s player of the month including Hanson, Batlle and Park.
Starting off with Kirsty Hanson. Hanson is a 24-year-old, Scottish left winger who plays for Aston Villa, but is on loan from Manchester United until the rest of the season. Hanson has
had a fantastic January, contributing to 3 goals in 3 games and receiving woman of the
match, in their 2-1 win against Tottenham Women in the first game of 2023.
Manchester United Women’s have been unbeaten this year so far, scoring 9 goals and only
conceding 1 in 3 games. Manchester United’s nomination this January is their right back,
Ona Batlle. The 23-year-old Spaniard has had a brilliant January, receiving a rating of 9.2
after her performance against Liverpool Ladies, where they triumphed 6 goals to nil. Ona
created the most chances (2) in this match, and she has been a massive contribution to
United’s back line and has been a major part of United’s excellent defensive record so far
this year.
Everton women have had a great start back to the WSL, winning both games. They narrowly
beat Reading Women 3-2 on the first game back, and they smashed West Ham women by 3
goals to nil, the following week. They currently sit 5th in the WSL, which is 5 places higher
then where they finished last year. Everton have a player nominated for January’s player of
the month, 21-year-old, Jessica Park. She managed to bag 1 goal and 1 assist in 2 matches
and is a young, exciting talent for the Merseyside team.
Overall, January has been an exciting month for women’s football and hopefully there are
many months ahead filled with fantastic football.
