On Friday afternoon, the Women’s Champions League Quarter-Final draw, was made.
The two English teams that qualified for the competition, Arsenal and Chelsea, are both still among the eight teams that remain. The two teams are both seeking to get their hands on the trophy. The last time that Arsenal Ladies won the Champions League, was back in 2007, and they are still the only English side to win it. Chelsea are looking to get vengeance after the 4-0 loss against Barcelona in the 2021 Final, in Sweden, and win it for the first time in Women’s club history.
It is still possible for there to be an all English final, due to how the draw has played out. However, both Arsenal and Chelsea will have to face very tough opponents in order to make the final in Eindhoven, in June.
Former England international, Ellen White, commenced the draw, which took place in Switzerland at midday.
Quarter-final draw
Bayern Munich v Arsenal
Lyon v Chelsea
Roma v Barcelona
Paris St-Germain v Wolfsburg
Semi-final draw
PSG/Wolfsburg v Bayern/Arsenal
Chelsea/Lyon v Barcelona/Roma
Chelsea is set to face eight-time champions and current holders, Lyon, in the Quarter-final. The winner of this fixture will then play the winner of Roma v Barcelona in the Semi final. In addition, Arsenal is set to face Bayern Munich the Quarter-final. The winner of this match will then play the winner of PSG/Wolfsburg in the Semi’s. this will be the first time that England international, Georgia Stanway has faced a WSL side, since leaving Manchester City.
Last year's runners-up Barcelona will face Roma in the last eight, whereas Paris St-Germain take on Wolfsburg. Barcelona fell short of a back-to-back Champions League success last year after losing 3-1 to Lyon in the final. They are hoping that history doesn’t repeat itself this year.
The first leg of the Quarter Final will be played on the 21st and 22nd of March. Whereas the second leg will be played the following week, on the 28th and 29th March.
Last season, Chelsea didn’t make it out of the Champions League group stage, and Arsenal got beaten, and knocked out, by Wolfsburg in the Quarter Finals. Both sides are hoping to progress much further this time around.
