The Spaniard is expecting to be announced as the new West Ham head coach in the next couple of days, but what can he bring to the Hammers?
The 57-year-old has won the Europa League with Sevilla back in 2020 and he has won La Liga when he was assistant coach for Real Madrid. The big one here for the Hammers is that he knows how to win the Europa league. As after West Ham have won the UEFA Conference League this is the next goal in their sights.
So how does a Lopetegui formation look like compared to an old West Ham style? The Spaniard likes to play with a 4-2-3-1 and counter quickly, this is similar to what the Hammers used to play at times apart from he plays with more attackers on the pitch so when they counter they have a higher success rate.
With the players that the Hammers have such as, Jarrod Bowen, Michail Antonio and Mohammed Kudus I believe they will find Lopetegui's style great as they all have a lot of pace to counter quickly and have a high success rate in 1V1 situations.
The manager has also managed in the Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers when he took them from bottom to finish 13th with only half a season left; he then chose to leave due to the club not being able to back him further due to financial difficulties.
The one thing is for sure is West Ham will have a lot of money to spend in the summer and with the help of their supporting director, Tim Steidien, Lopetegui will be able to bring in many players that can fit his style. It also helps that the new manager has been given his job early in the transfer window as this will allow him to go straight at their main targets and the players will all get a full pre-season with the new man and management.
Just like David Moyes said in his fair well interview, “West Ham are back on the map”, do you think Lopetegui can carry on and bring silverware back to the Hammers again?
