Will Brazil bring it home for the first time?

Brazil enter the tournament still looking for their first ever world title. They lost the final in 2007 and since have not got past the quarter final stage in the last three World Cups. During the lead up to the last World Cup in 2019, they were on bad form coming off the back of 9 consecutive defeats however their form in the lead up to this tournament has been a lot better. Going 10 consecutive games unbeaten and just losing out on penalties to England in the finnalissima at Wembley.

Head coach, Pia Sundhage, will be in charge for her first World Cup with Brazil after taking over in 2019. She is one of the most successful coaches in the women’s game, having won two Olympic medals with USA, reaching a World Cup final in 2011 and an Olympic silver with Sweden. Since taking over Brazil, it took her three years to get her hands on the first major trophy in charge of them, by winning the Copa America in 2022.

One player to look out for is 17 year old Attacking midfielder Aline Gomez. She has coke through the ranks at Ferroviaria and made her Brazil debut in the Finalissima vs England.

Orlando Pride Forward, Marta, also a six time winner of the best FIFA women’s player award, leads the squad in her sixth and final World Cup. She has scored 115 goals in 175 games for the national team and will be looking to finish her international career on a high. One of her teammates said “ We want to take inspiration from what Argentina did for Messi. We want to do the same for Marta”.
