Chelsea women's published a statement stating that aussie star Sam Kerr has become the next footballer to join the epidemic of the ACL injury.
Below is the statement from the club posted on X.
But what does this actually mean for Chelsea as they try to complete there seventh WSL title, the 2023/2024 season has already been one to remember for the west London side. In November it was announced that head coach, Emma Hayes would be moving onto new prospects after being at the club since 2012. All together this means that Sam Kerr will not get to play under Emma Hayes again as Hayes has previously been announced to be moving onto the USWNT team at the end of the season.
This opens up a spot for Hayes to fill however when you look at the squad depth Chelsea have it is filled with high profile players who could take over Kerrs scoring streaks. For example, Fran Kirby made her return since injury she has previously been known for her pace, ball control and the goals she creates. Another option of course would be youngster Lauren James, after being selected consistently for England camps she is definitely one too look out for when it comes to defending the blues. Lifelong Chelsea fan Aggie Beaver-Jones, has recently become a option for Hayes to pick, winning player of the month in November 2023 after scoring three goals in three matches. She is a young, exciting talent who for sure has a bright future ahead! But then there is the option of Maika Hamona, making her debut in December 2023 against Bristol city which ultImately resulted in a win. Although she may not score a high amount of goals, she is known for creating chances and having incredible vision to assist multiple goals. The final player who is highlighted as an option is 22 year old Mia fishel, signing for the club from Mexican side tigres. Known as 'big fish' within the Chelsea supporters, made a huge impact soaring on her debut in the London derby against Tottenham Hotspur. Making the side win the game 2-1 with an incredible header, she will be on everyone's radar for the Sam Kerr replacement!
But will Chelsea surprise everyone with a January signing of maybe a loan player to help until Sam Kerr makes her awaited return? With such a potential of squad rotation will Emma Hayes take the step of signing a new member?
Who do you think will replace Sam Kerr?
