The FA cup magic seems to have boiled over into the Women's game as Tottenham got a crucial penalty shootout victory over WSL title challengers Manchester City.
As Manchester City travelled to Brisbane Road to face Spurs, many would have expected a particular outcome. In their first meeting of the season, Manchester City managed to put 7 past Tottenham with Tottenham failing to score in their other 2 defeats to City this season, losing 2-0 and 1-0 respectively.
However, in spite of the momentum of both teams coming into this one, the magic of the FA Cup seemed to strike gold for home fans down Brisbane Road. This historic victory marks the first time that Spurs have made it to the semi finals of the FA Cup in their 39 year history.
This game however also marked the first ever draw after 90 minutes between the two sides after having now played 12 competitive games against one another in all competitions. Although, fans would be wanting to know what this result will mean for both teams going forward...
For Tottenham, this will be a huge confidence boost as well as a momentum boost. Spurs are currently sitting on 19 points and sit 6 points off of Liverpool and Manchester United in 4th and 5th respectively. Tottenham have 8 games left including one against Manchster United away from home which could prove to be a vital game as Tottenham pursue a potential top 4 finish in the Women's Super League. Tottenham will be hopig to ride this upset win as a wave of momentum for the conclusion of the season as they will be going up against Leicester City on the 17th March back at Brisbane Road, who will also be facing them in the semi finals of the FA Cup.
For Manchester City however, now is a time to either make or break for them. They are level on points with champions and league winners, Chelsea at 37 points. However, with Arsenal lingerig just three points behind them on 34 points, it puts their place in the title race in massive jeopardy should Manchester City not rebound immediately from this upset when they play Brighton and Hove Albion on the 17th March.
No matter whether the magic of the FA Cup has cursed Manchester City and upheld the spirits of Tottenham Hotspur, the end of the season sure seems as if it is going to be an exciting one no matter the outcome of either team's season.
