Tottenham Hotspur: Keep or Sell?

When it comes to the issues surrounding Tottenham Hotspur, the owners and the manager seem to take the large portion of the blame.

The ENIC Group and Daniel Levy and have failed to win a major trophy within the last 15 years of their tenure.

Managers of elite calibre and 'serial winner' status, in the form of Jose Mourihno and Antonio Conte, have come and gone without a title, leaving a stain on their careers.

There is one common denominator to both of these possible scapegoats; a squad of players in need of a rebuild. After analysing the players, let's see who is worth keeping and who needs to move on to the next step in their career.

At the bottom of the article you will find a squad list and whether each player will be kept, sold, or in some cases loaned out.

Hugo Lloris - Sell

After many years of loyalty, it may now be time for Hugo Lloris to enter the next chapter of his career.

The World Cup winner was considered as one of the best in the world for many years, but as of late, preventable mistakes have cost his reputation.

Spurs should be looking for a new number one this summer, with Brentford's David Raya currently a leading candidate for the role.

He will forever be a Spurs legend, regardless of what happens this summer.

Fraser Forster - Keep

The tallest player in the Premier League filled in for Hugo Lloris when he was injured this season and was largely faultless.

A penalty save late on against Nottingham Forest, among other key moments, justifies why Fraser Forster should remain as Tottenham's back up goalkeeper.

Pedro Porro - Stay

Pedro Porro has had a shaky start to life in North London with a poor debut against Leicester City, the embarrassing 6-1 defeat against Newcastle, among others.

However, the Spaniard has proven his worth when going forward, proving a threat from set pieces, collecting 3 goals and 3 assists since joining the club in January.

For this reason, the former Sporting wing-back should remain at the club as a key player, depending on the preferences of Ange Postecoglou.

Emerson Royal - Stay

Since the departure of Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier, it appears it takes another right-back to be signed for the current full-back to have their best performances in a Spurs shirt.

The signing of Matt Doherty elevated Serge Aurier's performances, the signing of Royal immensely improved Doherty's contribution and it appears Pedro Porro's signature has resulted in the same outcome for the Brazilian full-back.

After recently showing his ability to play on the right of a back three, the former Barcelona right-back is worth keeping as a player who, at the age of 24, is constantly looking to improve.

Japhet Tanganga - Sell

Japhet Tanganga gave Spurs fans excitement on his Premier League debut against Liverpool with his hard-working attitude and effective defending.

With the club hopefully looking to strengthen the backline this summer, mixed in with Tanganga's lack of game time, it may be time for the defender to look for a new club in an attempt to reach his potential.

Davinson Sanchez - Sell

The Colombian centre-back arrived from Ajax with high expectations due to his £42million price tag.

Unfortunately, as a result of inconsistent playing time, and the occasional costly error, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Davinson Sanchez leave the club this Summer for much less than what he arrived for.

It's a shame it hasn't worked out for Sanchez at Spurs, as he has a lot of the physical characteristics you would want from a centre-back. However, he struggles when playing out of the back, which means he tends to cause more problems than he prevents.

Sanchez can be an effective central defender but it will take regular game time at a club for the Colombian to reach his full potential.

Cristian Romero - Keep

Not much needs to be explained here. World Cup winning centre-back who puts his body on the line for his teammates and simultaneously oozes class.

Ange Postecoglou will play Cristian Romero, whether it is a back four or back five, he can do both effectively. A master in the art of defending and a joy to watch.

Eric Dier - Keep

This may need a bit more explaining. After a few calamitous errors over the course of the season, Eric Dier is someone I personally feel is worth keeping on for next season.

Having previously been a consistent defender, particularly before his return to the England squad, Dier was one of the first names on the team sheet.

For a few errors to result in the sale of the English central defender would seem somewhat of an overreaction, especially amid talks of a new contract.

When in the middle of a back three, Dier, for a very long time, was Tottenham's best option. He would be a great squad player for Postecoglou next season if Spurs make the necessary improvements in defence.

Ben Davies - Keep

The Welsh defender has been a solid option for Spurs and is often reliable as a left sided centre-back, left-back or left wing-back.

Ben Davies has been a loyal servant of the club and would be a strong option for Postecoglou next season.

Clement Lenglet - Keep (Buy)

The ball-playing ability and wealth of experience Clement Lenglet gives to the current Spurs squad means he should be someone Daniel Levy looks to retain when his loan spell expires.

Lenglet can carry the ball out of the defence and push the team forward, setting the tempo for others.

For only £12million, it seems like a good value for money signing that will strengthen Tottenham's defensive depth going into next season.

Ivan Perisic - Keep

Despite the likelihood of Ivan Perisic leaving the club this summer, it would be in the club's best interests to try and keep him.

Providing 8 assists in the Premier League this season, he is certainly a useful asset to have going forward.

The winning mentality the versatile Croatian possesses would also be of use in the dressing room as the hunt for silverware continues.

Ryan Sessegnon - Sell

After being struck by injury, Ryan Sessegnon has had little impact on the squad this season.

Since arriving for £25million from Fulham, Sessegnon has struggled to live up to the expectation many Spurs fans had placed on him.

With a focus on rebuilding the defence at the club, the future of Sessegnon could very much be in doubt.

Oliver Skipp - Keep

Having had a season of regular first team football, particularly since the injury of Rodrigo Bentancur, it is clear to see Oliver Skipp is a perfect home-grown option for Spurs.

Skipp still has plenty of room to develop and, as someone who is growing in confidence, it would be strange for him to depart this summer in any capacity.

Pape Matar Sarr - Sell (Loan)

Unfortunately, Pape Matar Sarr has not had the game time Oliver Skipp has had and therefore a loan move would be best for his career.

Sarr needs first-team action to develop as a player and if he is not going to get it in North London, it would be best to see him loaned out abroad or maybe to a lesser Premier League side.

Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg - Keep

The Danish midfielder has been a regular feature of the first-team this season and has been ever since his arrival 3 years ago.

Having now made the same amount of appearances for Spurs as he did for his previous employers, Southampton, he is certainly a core member of the squad.

Hojbjerg has also shown passionate leadership qualities throughout his time at the club and that is a required characteristic in a team that is looking to improve their current situation.

At the age of 27, Hojbjerg still has plenty left to offer in his career and it would be a surprise to see him leave this Summer.

Rodrigo Bentancur - Keep

Very little explanation needed for why Tottenham should keep Rodrigo Bentancur.

Having played in 31 games for the club and country this season, he received below a 7.0 rating on only three occasions.

Spurs' best player this season not named Harry Kane and hopefully he recovers well from his injury and can return to the electric form he was in.

Yves Bissouma - Keep

Having also experienced injury issues this season, Yves Bissouma has struggled to display the skill he showed at Brighton.

For this reason alone, I feel next season he will get more game time to prove he is the dominating midfielder Tottenham fans thought they'd signed last summer.

Arnaut Danjuma - Keep (Buy)

Despite reports saying Arnaut Danjuma being purchased on a permanent basis is unlikely, it would feel like a wasted opportunity for below £30million.

Danjuma has not been given sufficient game time during his tenure at the club but has scored twice and has provided a much needed burst of energy off the bench.

He clearly has promise and plenty of ability, especially when it comes to taking on a defender in a one-on-one scenario.

It would be a shame if his short spell in North London is not extended given his potential to contribute going forward, as well as his outstanding professionalism through out his loan move.

Dejan Kulusevski - Keep (Buy)

Although it may feel like we have already bought Dejan Kulusevski we still need to fully complete his permanent transfer to the club, due to Fabio Paratici's trademark loan with an obligation to buy transfers.

It is somewhat of a no-brainer for Tottenham to sign the Swede on a long-term deal, especially considering the form he showed earlier this season and the second-half of last season.

Richarlison - Keep

Despite only scoring one goal in the Premier League this season, Richarlison still is a high quality striker and is Brazil's number nine for a reason.

Having played second fiddle to Harry Kane all season, the occasional game on the left or right-wing has been all the Brazilian can feed off for game time and next season this will hopefully change.

For a club record fee of £60million, the Richarlison everyone saw at the World Cup is what needs to be brought to life at Tottenham Hotspur.

Heung-Min Son - Keep

Having reached 100 Premier League goals this season, Heung-Min Son is undoubtedly a Spurs legend.

It would be very unlikely to see him leave the club this season given his comments regarding improving his form next season to help out the team.

Harry Kane - Keep

With rumours of Harry Kane being a key target for Real Madrid this summer, due to the departure of Karim Benzema, it may be hard for Spurs to hold on to the club's all-time leading goalscorer.

However, Daniel Levy is unlikely to let Kane leave for a small fee and may even prefer for Kane to stay on another year and risk him leaving for a free next year.

Tottenham need Kane to play their best football, and seeing England's all-time leading goalscorer lifting a trophy with the Lilywhites would be an extremely cathartic feeling for the Walthamstow born striker.

Being out of European competition next season will provide a higher chance for domestic success, something that has been craved for well over a decade.

Sergio Reguilón -Keep

If we are planning on selling Ryan Sessegnon and are bracing for the potential departure of Ivan Perisic, then we must try and keep hold of a left back in the meantime.

Sergio Reguilón has offered plenty in a Spurs shirt and could continue to do so under Ange Postecoglou, given his attacking ideology.

Harry Winks - Sell

A player who has done a lot for the club in terms of service and professionalism but ultimately offered very little since Mauricio Pochettino's departure. This indicates it may be time for Tottenham to try and cash in on Harry Winks.

This being said, Postecoglou could see a player in Winks he believes will be useful as he is one of the longest servants at the club.

Bryan Gil - Keep

Given the limited time Bryan Gil has had to prove himself, I feel it would be a waste of a high potential player if Spurs sold him in this window.

Postecoglou often likes to have wingers who are good in one on one situations and Bryan has proven he is effective in these scenarios.

The Spaniard should at least have more of an opportunity to prove himself before being let go on a permanent basis.

Giovanni Lo Celso - Sell

The Argentinian midfielder has had impressive performances out in Spain with Villarreal, where the style of football appears to suit him best.

Selling Giovanni Lo Celso would be a way of the club generating funds to invest in a player that will add more competition to the first team.

As much as Lo Celso could potentially be that creative spark the first team is in need of, he has not proved consistently enough he is up to the task of providing plenty of assists for attacking players.

Joe Rodon - Sell

Jose Mourinho praised Joe Rodon immensely during his tenure as Tottenham manager, suggesting he is a player the club should take good care of.

However, the Welsh centre-back is currently coming off the back of a loan move at Stade Rennais where he struggled at times to play. As a result, I feel it could be time for Rodon to reignite his career elsewhere.

Djed Spence - Keep

Djed Spence also was struggling for game time under Bruno Génésio at Stade Rennais, but has yet had the chance to prove himself at Spurs.

With a new attacking coach at the helm, it will be interesting to see if Djed Spence can remind fans of the player he was at Nottingham Forest.

Tanguy Ndombele - Keep

I will be the first to admit I have bias on Tanguy Ndombele as a long-term admirer of his footballing ability, since his Lyon days. However, I feel a revival of the midfielder's career is very possible due to the frightening level of skill he possesses.

Ange Postecoglou will take no laziness at the club and if Ndombele can become more reliable in terms of his fitness, we could see the Frenchman become a contender for first team football on a regular basis.

Destiny Udogie - Keep

Having yet had the opportunity to play for the club, it will be exciting to see how one of the most exciting wing-backs in the Serie A, Destiny Udogie, will fare in the Premier League.

With a large clear out in the defence this summer, Udogie is destined for some first team action where he will look to prove to the Tottenham why he was worth £21million.
