Todd Boehly: The American dream (gone wrong)

Writer's picture: Rahan GuptaRahan Gupta

Todd Boehly took over Chelsea as a result of a forced government sale of Chelsea FC in May 2022, since then Chelsea F.C. have had a net spend of around -£662 million pounds, this means after weighing in transfers in and out, Chelsea F.C. have lost a total of £662 million pounds in transfer fees. Chelsea F.C. have also gone through 3 managers in the Boehly era, to put this into context, prior to the Boehly era it took 6 years for 3 managers to be sacked.

manager policy

In the Boehly era 3 managers have been sacked, the first manager being Thomas Tuchel, Thomas Tuchel the season prior won a Champions League trophy for Chelsea F.C. this was a monumental achievement and something that Chelsea never expected to win having placed 6th in the Premier League that season. In august of the 22/23 season Thomas Tuchel was sacked although having not performed extremely badly and being backed by Boehly in the summer, this outraged many Chelsea fans as Chelsea had spent £200 million that summer on players that Thomas Tuchel wanted yet they sacked him after a few games into the campaign. This also outraged Chelsea fans as this was not an expected sacking. they then replaced Tuchel with Graham Potter, who at the time was a great appointment due to his time with Brighton. Brighton And Hove Albion are a team who have been recently renowned for their extremely succesful structure in terms of turnover and player scouting. In this Todd Boehly era Chelsea lack structure and direction and seem to be all over the place at times. A specific example of this is when Graham Potter clearly needed a striker as Chelsea massively underperformed on xG, and Chelsea signed Mykhailo Mudryk for £89 million at a time where there was multiple suited options for the striker position E.G. Lautaro Martinez, Vlahovic or even Nickolas Jackson at the time. This lack of structural brilliance in the Chelsea board led to Graham Potter's inevitable sacking.

player policy

Chelsea recently have been signing a lot of players leading to a surplus of players in the school, as a result of dressing rooms leaks there have been claims saying there is not enough space in the changing room to fit all of the squad, due to this Chelsea have been stockpiling players on loan such as Angelo, Datro Fofana, Slolina and many more. This is no way to build a football club as these young players will not be getting key time on the training ground with the new manager as there has been plenty of manager changes recently at Chelsea. In an interview Mauricio Pochettino was asked what his plans were with Malang Sarr, he replied with "who", the fact that a manager does not know his own squad is the epitome of what is going wrong with the Blues. In my opinion the recruitment is all wrong and Chelsea now need to focus on player sales to even out the dressing room.

The Infamous long term contract

Chelsea's inclination towards long-term contracts with players has emerged as a detrimental trend, casting shadows over the club's financial stability and team dynamics. The commitment to extended deals, often for players who fail to meet expectations, results in bloated wage bills and limits the flexibility required in the ever-changing football landscape. The surplus of contracted players exacerbates the issue, leading to a congested squad with limited room for emerging talents. Additionally, the reluctance to offload underperforming players tied to extended contracts diminishes the club's bargaining power in the transfer market. This myopic approach not only strains the financial resources but also hampers the strategic overhaul necessary for sustained success. Chelsea must reconsider their contract policies, emphasizing adaptability and a more discerning evaluation of player value for a healthier, more competitive future.
