Sweden comfortably win Group G as Argentina go home

Sweden ensured a 100% win record in the group stage as they beat a lacklustre Argentina two goals to nil.

Rebecka Blomqvist scored the first goal of the game midway through the second half with a header before Rubensson scored a penalty just before injury time.

Wins against Italy and South Africa meant Sweden had already guaranteed their spot in the knockout stages.

It was Argentina who needed a win against all odds and hope for an Italy and South Arica draw.

Chances were few and far between in the opening stages of the game as Sweden were very laid back on the ball, knowing their fate was already decided.

It was Argentina who needed to do the pressing to try and catch the Swedes off guard.

A couple of long shots from Argentina were the only thing of note in the first 15 minutes but both failed to go on target.

Schough registered the first shot on target with a 30-yard free kick but it was a comfortable save for Correa. She was then consequently booked for a late challenge on Nunez.

Argentina were looking semi dangerous going forward and Banini flicked a looping header over the bar from a free kick.

The Swedes grew into the game and began to take a foothold, controlling possession, and Schough had a half chance after some nice play down the right hand side but she headed wide.

Argentina were dealt a huge blow just five minutes before half time as Bonsegundo was stretchered off the field in tears.

The tightly contested encounter went into the break goalless, with neither side managing to find the breakthrough.

As the hour mark passed, there was still no creative spark in the final third from either side as Argentina were beginning to get more and more desperate for a goal to avoid elimination.

The game was scrappy and had no flow to it which perhaps highlighted Argentina's nerves of knowing the implications of the result.

It took 66 minutes, but the opener was finally found, however, it was Sweden who scored it.

It was played out to Jakobsson on the right who put it on a plate for Blomquist to head into a practically open net.

Not what Argentina were looking for but Sweden had taken control of affairs.

And the game was wrapped up in the 89th minute as Rubensson converted a penalty into the left corner. The spot kick was awarded after Blomqvist was wrestled to the ground.

The remaining embers of the game slowly burned as Argentina exited the World Cup without managing to make any real chances in the game.

Sweden were not at their best but they did enough to get the three points and can now look ahead to a round of 16 matchup against favourites USA.
