Struggling London City Lionesses Sack Manager & Assistant Manager

London City currently sit 10th in the Women's Championship, only above the relegation zone on goal difference. The Lionesses have only managed 12 points from 15 games with Carolina Morace in charge.

Assistant Coach Nicola Williams was also sacked by the Lionesses. London City's comments stated that the club had "parted company" with both the coach and assistant coach, but did not give a reason. Their departures are assumed to be due to London City's struggling league form.

London City stated they would "like to place on record its thanks to Carolina and Nicola for their contributions this season."

Carolina Morace is an Italian Hall of Fame inductee. Morace was the second-highest goalscorer in Italy's history, with 105 goals in 150 games. She has also played in six UEFA Women's Euros, and was the first player to score a hat-trick in a Women's World Cup.

The Italian legend was appointed head-coach in July 2023, with a contract intending to last until June 2025. She joined London City from SS Lazio Women, with whom she helped secure promotion to Serie A in 2020/21.

Morace was previously the Italian Women's head coach for five years, qualifying for back-to-back UEFA Women's European Championships. However, she failed to have the same success with London City as she had with Italy and SS Lazio.

London City have had a poor Championship campaign this season. The poor performances have come as a shock considering the club's successful 22/23 season, which saw them finish third, just 3 points behind Bristol City who received promotion to the WSL.

The Lionesses have got 3 wins, 3 draws and 9 losses from 15 games, leaving them fighting to stay out of the relegation zone. They currently sit on 12 points, equal with 11th place Lewes, and only remain above The Rooks on goal difference.

Points are urgently needed if London City want to stay out the relegation zone. With only 7 games remaining in the season, it is understandable that the Lionesses have chosen to make changes to their coaching staff before it is too late.

London City have however had a successful run in the Conti Cup this season, making it to the quarter finals for the first time. They will host Arsenal at Princes Park in the quarter final.

The timing of the departure of Morace and Williams' departures have been questioned by both London City and Arsenal fans, with the announcement coming out when London City should have been playing Arsenal, but their game had been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Darren Smith, who joined London City in Summer 2023 as First Team Goalkeeper Coach, will take up the position of Interim Head Coach, as London City fight to remain in the Championship next season.
