Since Thomas Tuchel's controversial appointment as Head Coach at Bayern Munich, he has continually fallen short of the grace gifted to him. The Bayern Munich board shockingly sacked Tuchel's protege Julian Nagelsmann, in hopes that they could secure the top coach who had left Chelsea shortly before. When the German took over from Nagelsmann, he quickly fell out of both domestic cups, the Champions League and then nearly lost the league on the last day to rivals Borussia Dortmund. Luckily, a Jamal Musiala goal in the last minute meant that the German giants clinched their 32nd league title by goal difference. Despite a rocky start to his managerial career at Bayern, the board sustained faith in Thomas Tuchel and gave him a summer and January transfer window. However, despite securing world class talent Harry Kane from Tottenham, he missed out on many other targets. One of them being Declan Rice, who in the end decided Arsenal was much a more attractive move.
Although Bayern Munich fans were torn on the transfer window, the expectation is still for them to win the Bundasliga, advance as far as they can in the Champions League and win the domestic cups. But that now seems like a distant dream and for the first time in over a decade, Bayern look like they could be trophyless. They are still in the Champions League but after losing the first leg 1-0 to Lazio, where French defender Upamecano saw red, there is mounting pressure for Tuchel's side to win convincingly. They were knocked out of the DFB Pokal Cup by third division side FC Saarbrucken and are now trailing 8 points behind Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen. After yet another loss this weekend in the league to VFL Bochum, the Bayern board sprung to action and announced that Thomas Tuchel will be leaving the role at the end of the season.
Yet the question to ask is, what happens if Bayern Munich fail to win? Rivals Bayer Leverkusen are on a strong title charge, beating Bayern 3-0 and are now 8 points clear in the league. Xabi Alonso who is a still a new young manager has yet to lose a game in any competition and has already equalled Bayern Munich's 32 games unbeaten streak. For Leverkusen fans, there is full belief that the Spaniard can lead them to their first ever Bundesliga title. The thought of missing out on the league is a scary reality for some but for
world class striker Harry Kane this would be a dreadful situation, as he left trophyless Tottenham to finally win some silverware. The German giants have won the league eleven times in a row and considering they just about won the league with a lucky last minute goal last season, it would be seen as a disaster if they were to end that winning streak. Many neutral fans have even joked about Harry Kane and Eric Dier bringing the Tottenham trophy curse to Bayern and are intrigued to see how season pans out. Unfortunately for Thomas Tuchel the end of the road is near and there is incredible amounts of pressure to achieve what other Bayern managers have but as of now, the situation is dire.
