New signings: 3 defenders to look out for this upcoming WSL season.

Following the huge success of this great league in recent years, the desire to play in the FA Women’s Super League is increasing.

Managers Marc Skinner (Manchester United), Emma Hayes (Chelsea) and Carla Ward (Aston Villa) have all made exciting signings this upcoming season, proving the competition in the English highest tier of Women’s football to be constantly growing.

Maya Le Tissier- Manchester United

Although Skinner has signed an abundance of attackers, in the hopes of not falling narrowingly short of the UEFA Champions League like last season, defender Maya Le Tisiier has been signed with the hopes that she is likely to keep the opposition out. At just 20, she has a plethora of experience, including four years (2018-2022) in the WSL for Brighton & Hove Albion. As well as this, her impressive positional awareness and ability to create play from the back can be seen in her 6 international appearances for England U23’s. Skinner’s side will really benefit from her versatile ability in playing anywhere in the backline, creating a more harmonious set up for the upcoming season.

Kadeisha Buchanan- Chelsea

Tokyo 2020 gold medalist for Canada, Kadeisha Buchanan, becomes one of Hayes’ defensive signings. Playing every minute of this tournament whilst only letting in a minor total of three goals (one of which was an own goal) proves her to be a real contender in the WSL, as she will be required to use these incredible defensive skills against impressive strikers like Vivianne Miedema (Arsenal). A leader both on and off the pitch, as seen through her five years at previous club Lyon, she will offer Chelsea a great structure going forwards.

Rachel Daly- Aston Villa

Best known recently for being a European Champion this summer with England, Rachel Daly will provide much needed experience for Villa. At 30 years old, her 57 international appearances for England prove to be extremely valuable, especially for Ward’s hopes of moving further up the table this season. Versatile is an understatement for Daly, as her England career suggests her to be a brilliant fullback, but her Houston Dash playing reveals her attacking skills. Whether she’s attacking the goal or defending it, she is a key player in Aston Villa’s line up, suggesting Aston Villa to be a team to look out for.

Despite these three stand out players, many new signings have been witnessed prior to the 2021/22 season. What players do you have your eye on?
