Luton Town fans must stay level-headed

Luton Town fans must stay level-headed as their first Premier League season approaches its conclusion.

Luton Town fans have been on quite the journey in the past decade, going from the National League all the way to the top flight of English football. It has been a journey which has seen plenty of heartbreaks. But across this time Luton have kept their never say die attitude and their ability to pick themselves up from the depths of despair in order to overcome challenges and rise up the English Football League.

A lot of fans have taken to social media after the club suffered their fifth straight defeat, in a 3-2 loss to Aston Villa on Sunday night, to let their frustrations be heard, with a lot of fans accepting relegation.

Luton Town currently sit 4 points deep into the relegation zone, with a game in hand on 17th place, Nottingham Forest, 5 points behind Everton and 6 behind Brentford, with a game in hand on all 3. It is ludicrous that Luton fans have written off their own team.

The rise from non-league to the Premier League produced many moments which let their fans and the country know, never write off Luton Town.

First of all, lets look back to the 2013/14 season; Luton Town started their surge up the football league, topping the National League with an incredible 101 points. 2017/18 was a fresh reminder that Luton Town are not messing around, after an incredible 2016/17 season, finishing 4th in League Two, the season ended with a heart breaking 6-5 aggregate loss to Blackpool. This did not stop the resilient town from getting to where they wanted to be as in 2017/18 season, they finished on 88 points, securing promotion to League One. Fast forward 2 years and Luton Town are 6 points from safety with 9 games to go in the Championship and after struggling all season, relegation seemed to be becoming a harsh reality, but they survived. During that run, the town were embarrassed 5-0 at home by Reading but that did not stop Luton, who went onto to win 3 and draw 2 of the remaining 5 fixtures.

Luton Town are now 26 games into the season and still have a good chance of survival. At the start of the season, like many times before, fans from around the country had written Luton Town off, predicting them to finish 20th. It would not be a surprise if they make people eat their own words, yet again.

It's also worth remembering that both Everton and Nottingham Forest are subject to investigations for potential breaches of Premier League profitability and sustainability rules, with points deductions a possible punishment.

Although history does not write the future, one lesson has been learnt over the past 10 years, never write off Luton Town. They have overcame bigger obstacles in the past and the fans should be right behind the team in the remaining 12 games and who knows what could happen next.
