There were 58 WSL transfers in the January transfer window, with a record-breaking transfer request as well.
The previous world record bid was the transfer of Keira Walsh, from Manchester City to Barcelona. However, this fee was broken this January, as Arsenal bided half a million pounds for the Manchester United striker, Alessia Russo. The Red Devils denied the £500,000 bid for Russo, however she is out of contract at the end of the season.
One surprising January transfer was, Chelsea and England forward, Bethany England, signing for London rivals, Tottenham Hotspur. The England number 19 signed a three-year deal for £250,000. She left Chelsea after seven years at the club, scoring 74 goals in 164 appearances. She’s scored 3 goals for Spurs in 4 appearances and has settled in well in Spurs, and she looks to be able to contribute more goals for her side.
Jordan Nobbs left Arsenal Women’s, after a 13 year long career. She scored 75 goals in 242 appearances for Arsenal. During her time at Arsenal, Nobbs won five Women’s League Cups, four Women’s FA Cups and three WSL titles. In January, she left Arsenal for Aston Villa, as she stated that she wanted more game time approaching the end of her career.
Although Arsenal lost Jordan Nobbs, they signed 23-year-old Victoria Pelova from Ajax as a new substitute. Pelova is a Dutch professional footballer who played for Ajax for 4 seasons. During her time at Ajax, she scored 11 goals in 64 appearances and is hoping to break through into the Arsenal side.
The WSL has had an exciting January transfer window with so much young talent joining the league e.g., Victoria Pelova, Sofie Lundgaard and Remy Siemsen, and hopefully they will be able to showcase their talent during the rest of the season and for future ones to come.
