The Dutch international has endured a difficult start to life on Merseyside. One of four that Jurgen Klopp signed in his rebuild last summer has not made the impact that Dominik Szoboszlai or Alexis Mac Allister have thus far.
The 21-year-old was signed for £35 million pounds in the summer and was the last of a huge spending spree from the Reds. Many were excited at his acquisition but he is yet to set the world a light for Liverpool. Gravenberch struggled at Bayern last season and struggled to fit into Thomas Tuchel's double pivot midfield.
The Dutchman was brought in due to his excellent ball-carrying abilities and perhaps to add more dynamism to Jurgen Klopp's engine room with 2.58 progressive carries this season. He has yet to register a goal or assist in the Premier League but has been impressive in the Europa League.
Two goals and an assist have shown a very impressive group-stage campaign and he was arguably the Merseyside Reds' best player in the Europa League thus far. The Dutchman particularly impressed in a man-of-the-match performance in a 5-1 win against Toulouse at Anfield.
Some Liverpool fans have mixed opinions about the 21-year-old this season and his recent performance against Arsenal was one to forget as he was brought in for injured Dominik Szoboszlai. The Dutchman was substituted for Harvey Elliot in the 58th minute after being less than impressive despite creating Liverpool's only goal of the match.
The midfielder struggled to have any impact on the game and has struggled to impress in his other starts in the Premier League this season. Particularly for his defensive contribution as he only has 0.90 interceptions per 90 and has often been criticised for "jogging" back when he is asked to defend in transition as well as a lack of work rate at times.
Jurgen Klopp's sides are always known to be energetic and implement a gegenpress that causes teams to make mistakes. However, the Dutchman's lack of energy has infuriated some fans as of late.
This doesn't pose well for a Liverpool side competing for the Premier League title against Manchester City, who boast Rodri, and Arsenal who regularly rely on Declan Rice to clear up their messes. With Gravenberch under performing, Liverpool don't have that natural number six.
The young man clearly possesses a lot of talent and is still very young at 21 years of age. The midfielder has a lot to learn if he is to thrive for the Reds even after Jurgen Klopp has gone. The new manager could bring out the best in the Dutchman and see him fulfil the glaringly obvious potential he has.
However, it will not be easy as the depth in midfield is ever-increasing with Thiago Alcantara returning and young Stefan Bajcetic coming back in a few weeks. The 21-year-old will have his work cut out to become a regular starter at the club but he has all the tools to become a world beater in a very exciting young Liverpool team.
