If Harry Kane was to leave Tottenham this summer, would it benefit the club or not?

There is currently a huge speculation over Harry Kane’s future. He has one year left on his contract at Tottenham however he has ambitions to win trophies and without any European football this coming season, Spurs isn’t looking the most appealing. Despite Kane being known as Tottenham’s star player and without him the club could majorly struggle, it could benefit the club too if he was to leave this summer.

A major positive if Kane was to leave is the amount of money that could come into the club. Kane is a world class striker and chairman Daniel Levy is a strong businessman so therefore wouldn’t settle for anything less than £100m for the striker. Levy could receive up to £200m selling Kane which is of big use to him due to still being in debt from the building of the Tottenham Hotspur stadium back in 2019. There are not many other ways Levy could get that amount of money and so he should really make the most of it.

Harry Kane will be 31 by next season (2024/25) and so his value could start to decrease as he is getting older, now is arguably the best time to get the maximum amount of money for him. Similarly, once his contract at Tottenham ends, he will leave on a free which is now less than a year away and it would be a huge blow to not receive anything for him.

Tottenham’s new manager, Ange Postecoglou would of course like to work with Harry Kane in his first season managing the club, however he could also benefit from him leaving this summer. The money again will be an extraordinary amount and could enable Ange to completely rebuild the squad without the worry of sticking to a tight budget. Giving Ange full reign to transform the squad would be the best start to his career at Tottenham being on a 4-year contract.

It would also provide Ange clarity if Kane was to leave this summer. Being a new manager, he is going to want a fresh start and work with what he’s got to match his football style particularly in the first season settling in. Not knowing if Kane is going to leave or not at the end of the season makes this more difficult for him, he can’t properly focus on rebuilding because of the uncertainty of his main players future at the club. Ange is also known for being strong willed and said at Celtic that he only has eyes for those who are fully committed to the club and show that they want to be there – this means he will not stand for the uncertainty.

Initially when asked about the situation, most Tottenham fans would think Kane leaving this summer would have a huge negative impact on the club. Kane is a world class striker and extremely influential for Tottenham, it would be a massive task trying to replace him. He is Tottenham’s all time highest goal scorer (280 goals), has won 3 golden boots and has secured 213 goals + 46 assists in 320 appearances in the Premier League making him the second highest goal scorer behind Alan Shearer. This really shows how big of a player he is and that no one else will compare to him.

The current situation is that the German side Bayern Munich want him, they have already placed two bids forward (£60m and £70m) which have been rejected due to Daniel Levy being unwilling to sell him unless there is a huge offer. Manchester United were keen to buy him too however they were not willing to pay over £100m which was the minimum Levy had set and now it is confirmed he will not be sold to an English club this summer.

Moving to Bayern would be great for Kane’s personal goals. It is believed he would like to go to a side abroad especially one in the Champions League, and win trophies. PSG is another club who is monitoring the situation which may tempt him. If Bayern cannot secure him this summer, it is looking increasingly likely that he will move there next summer on a free.

As of this week however, Kane has said that he will not leave Tottenham if a deal is not agreed before the start of the season on August 13th. He believes it would be unfair on Ange Postecoglou if he was to leave after the start of the campaign especially with him being a new manager. This means that Bayern need to cough up soon and meet Daniel Levy’s strong requirements if they want him this summer. There are also talks of Kane negotiating a contract extension with Tottenham if the club show significant progress under their new manager, at this point no one knows what is going to happen and it won’t become clearer until a few weeks’ time.

At the end of the day, it’s all about Kane’s personal goals. Does he want to stay in the Premier League with the club he’s been at 14 years and try to break the Premier Leagues highest goal scorer record? Or is his main aim to win a trophy with a club and sees it more likely elsewhere?
