Hyam’s scorpion kick sends Rovers back to winning ways!

Writer: Elliot BenfoldElliot Benfold

Rovers moved themselves up to 3rd in the Championship on Tuesday night after Ryan Hedges and Dom Hyam got their first goals for the club to wrap up an excellent 3 points against Watford.

3 changes were made to Rovers starting 11 as they changed to a back three with Scott Wharton and Daniel Ayala coming back into the squad making up the back with Dom Hyam. Lewis Travis moved back into his regular midfield role with Hayden Carter taking his place in the right wing back role. Tyrhys Dolan also made a return to the starting 11.

Rovers came out flying with a sea of chances being created by the home side in the opening 10 minutes. Strikes from Brereton Diaz, Hedges and Dolan were all well saved by Dan Bachmann keeping the score line at 0-0 early in the game.

Rovers continued their sheer dominance inside the first half and were eventually rewarded with a goal scoring chance as Tyrhys Dolan’s low ball into the box found Ryan Hedges, who poked the ball past Bachmann, to score his first ever goal in a Rovers shirt and put them rightfully in front inside 38 minutes. Rovers came close to a second in first half added time as Ben Brereton Diaz’s curler was just wide of the post.

Watford's only contributions in the first half were a penalty appeal, and a very dangerous chance right before the half time whistle as a misplaced header by Scott Wharton landed straight to Hamza Choudhary in the box, however the poor shot was parried away by Kaminski keeping Rovers in a deserved lead at half time.

Watford changed their system after a poor first half showing making one change as Dan Gosling replaced Francisco Sierralta. The Hornets finally got going in the first 15 minutes of the second half, creating a few chances and had the ball in the back of the net after a scramble in the box however, the flag was up way before the ball went in.

Despite the early efforts to get back into the game from Watford, Blackburn took control again; chances came from Ben Brereton Diaz as he had a shot saved from Bachmann after a quick break exploited the spaces left by Watford in defence. Another decent strike from Diaz was also deflected wide for a corner with 10 minutes to go.

The corner conceded resulted in a second and winning goal for The Blues as Dom Hyam produced an outrageous scorpion kick to get his first goal for the club in the 82nd minute, winning the game for Blackburn Rovers. Morton’s corner was flicked on by Ayala, which eventually found Hyam, who adjusted his body to produce what can only be described as a freak goal.

Rovers deservingly won the game with what was the best performance of the season against a strong recently relegated side tipped to be promoted this season. The Blues controlled the game and put excellent pressure on Watford, ensuring they didn’t have any time to show their worth in the game. Ryan Hedges was the man of the match, producing a fantastic performance and his first Rovers goal in what was a great three points earned at Ewood Park, putting Rovers 3rd in the Championship before the Wednesday night games had been played.
