How well will the Netherlands do without Arsenal Striker Vivianne Miedema this summer?

The Dutch star tore her ACL in a Champions League match against Lyon back in December.

Miedema is the Dutch’s highest goal scorer across both men and women’s football, scoring 95 goals at just 27 years of age.

The Dutch star also missed the majority of their Euro’s campaign due to having Covid. She did play her part when the nation won their home Euros back in 2017, at the time she was only 21.

After the Netherlands did have a rather bad run in the Euro’s last year, they will be looking to change things for the World Cup. They got knocked out by France in the quarter finals and since then brought in a new manager, Andries Jonker. He has previous been the assistance back in 2001 for the women’s national team.

The Netherlands do have many notable names which include, Danielle Van De Donk, Jill Roord and Victoria Pelova, so there is still a chance the Dutch can add another trophy to their cabinet this summer. They also have captain Sherida Spitse, who has played over 210 games for her national team, and over 200 matches in the Dutch league- her experience will be key this summer.

In their group they will face number 1 seeded USA, Portugal and Vietnam. FIFA ranking wise they will be expected to make it out of their group and finish second. They are ranked 9th in the FIFA World Rankings, but it wasn’t too long ago when they were ranked 3rd. Their opening game of the tournament will be against the Portuguese on Sunday 23rd.

The Dutch national team have prepared well by winning their last 2 matches heading into the World Cup- Belgium and Poland. Both of these games were without their star striker.

Do you believe, even without Miedema, the Netherlands can add another trophy this summer?
