Ellen White: The Lionesses’ record goalscorer leaves the pitch.

England and Manchester City legend, Ellen White, has announced her retirement from football, ending her career on a high as a European Champion.

Scoring 52 international goals, two of which were during the unforgettable summer just witnessed, makes her the top goal scorer for the Lionesses and one short of the overall England record.

But how did White gain this title?

2010 saw her first international goal in her first England appearance. At just 20 years old, she came off the bench just after the hour mark to lob the Austrian keeper, which put the Lionesses’ through to the next stage of the World Cup.

She proved her brilliance once again just over a year later, scoring in the 2011 World Cup in Germany against eventual champions Japan.

Alongside both Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, White secured joint top-scorer in the 2019 World Cup, which took England to the semi-finals.

A hat-trick in an impressive 20-0 World Cup qualifying match against Latvia in 2021, placed her above Kelly Smith’s mark of 46 goals, which was the moment she gained her record-breaking status.

Despite these incredible previous achievements, a stand out moment in her england career most certainly will be getting her hands on international silverware, as she helped England bring it home this summer in the 2022 Euro’s.

Not only has she performed to an extremely high standard in an England Shirt, but also whilst representing her various English clubs.

Arsenal appears to be her most successive spell in the WSL, where she helped the Gunners win the Women’s Super League title in 2011 and 2012, as well as two FA cups and three League Cups.

Recent years have also proved to be victorious with Man City, as she won both cups once more and the FA cup for the 2019-20 season.

15 goals for Birmingham in 2017-2018 earnt her the golden boot, expressing her expertise in finding the net no matter what badge she embodies.

These are just a few key events in Ellen White’s career, showing how she has and will continue to inspire young girls to play football. Her instagram post further highlights this, emphasising that everyone should “Go out there and be the very best version of you!”

What an incredible player and person we have been fortunate enough to witness play for both country and club, who knows what she will do next!
