Early WSL transfer window: new additions for Tottenham Hotspur

Just a week into the new year, Spurs women have been busy! The early part of the January transfer window has brought new faces to North London as Robert Vilahamn continues to build his squad.

The Lilywhites saw a fairly positive first half of the season, flaunting moments of impressive football and securing some appreciable results. Signing off for the winter break in style, the result which closed the first half of the campaign was a North London Derby win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. A history making day for the club.

Spurs changed their set-up with the appointment of Robert Vilahamn early in the summer, who has been the face behind their constructive performances so far this season. Implementing his offensive style of play at the club he is working to continue to build his squad in the January transfer window. Over the summer his arrivals began with the likes of Martha Thomas, Olga Antinen and Luana Buhler, who have each cemented their place in the London side. Thomas has been particularly excellent, with 7 league goals to her name at this point in the campaign.

Spurs have introduced 3 new faces into their squad already, their first addition, Matilda Vinberg, is a Swedish International who has joined the Lilywhites after a successful spell at Swedish side Hammarby, winning the double with them last season. The 20 year-old attacking midfielder is an exciting young prospect and was named League Breakthrough Player of the Year in the Damallsvenskan. She also picked up a player of the year accolade at her former club. No doubt she will find her feet in Tottenham's squad, playing into Vilahamn's forward-thinking play alongside the likes of Grace Clinton and Kit Graham.

Alongside one Matilda, they introduced another. Australian international Charlotte Grant impressed for the Matildas last year at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, where they saw the semi-finals. After spending 3 years in the A-League with Adelaide United, she took to the Damallsvenskan where she won 3 titles with Rosengård; a move to Vittsjo GIK followed and after seeing out her contract there, the defender has made her move to the Women's Super League. As an attacking-minded full-back she will slot right into the high-press Vilahamn is beginning the implement in the team.

Shaung Wang was picked up by the club as she signed a deal in December last year. Joining up with Spurs this month, Wang is an established Chinese international who can bring her abundance of experience to the team. Captaining her country with over 100 caps, she has been involved in 3 World Cups, the Olympics and won the AFC Women's Asian Cup in 2022. Gaining experience at an array of clubs, she began her career at Wuhan Jianghan University, signing for South Korean side Daejeon Sportstoto shortly after, in 2013. In her first season the team won the Korean Women's FA Cup Final where Wang was named MVP. In 2016, she signed with Dalian Quanjian, winning back-to-back Chinese Women's Super League titles, followed that came a move overseas to France as she saw a season with PSG in 2018. She returned to Wuhan Jianghan University winning 2 additional Chinese Women's Super League titles in 2021 and 2022, before she took a new pursuit in the NWSL at Racing Louisville FC. She brings her experience, energy and technical excellence to North London.

Tottenham are also rumoured to be interested in Swedish international Amanda Nilden. The 25 year-old full-back currently plays for Italian side Juventus, who are demanding €90k plus add-ons, according to Juventus News 24. She could be another great addition to the side, strengthening their defensive block.

Robert Vilahamn has clearly had a productive January transfer window so far! Making use of his time and connections from his time in Sweden and the Damallsvenskan, it is looking like they are building something special in North London. Working to create and maintain a style of play where his team plays the 'Tottenham way', is there more where this came from?

Spurs' first game back following the winter break sees them take on Women's Championship side Sheffield United in the FA Cup, on Sunday January 14th. Their first WSL fixture sees an away day, facing London rivals West Ham United on Sunday January 21st.
