Chelsea's nail-biting victory over Manchester United on Thursday evening saw Cole Palmer headline the papers and receive thoroughly deserved praise. Although they still remain mid-table, could Palmer's form upgrade team performance and morale?
I'm sure many fans would not have expected Cole Palmer to be having such an outstanding first season. With the club being in the situation it is currently in, there are not many pull factors appealing to world class players. However it's clear to see that his switch from Manchester City is paying off.
After only 25 appearences in the Premier League, Palmer added 16 goals and 8 assists to his name, placing him second on goals in the league just behind Erling Haaland on 18. In and amongst the best players in the league on paper exagerrates Palmers perfromances week in week out for a struggling Chelsea side. Metaphorically carrying his side on numerous occasions masks the young age of the Englishman. Maturing and gaining experience will only better this abilities.
Chelsea have been below par most of the time this season especially against mid and low table opposition. With losses to Wolves and Everton, and a draw to a 10 man Burnley side shows the lack of consistency that the team are able to maintain. Problems are still within the dressing room at Chelsea but things are slowly, but problably not surely, creeping towards improvements.
Individual performances have overshadowed team performances over the past few match days as some players took advantage of centre stage and others slighly denting their technical reputation all whilst Chelsea are sitting in 10th position. On a brighter side, Chelsea sit just two points behind West Ham who are in seventh. The Blues also have two games in hand, so the gap to the potential European spots is a lot closer than expected.
Chelsea head to Bramall lane on Sunday with expectations to close the gap to the others even further. With Cole Palmer in the form of his career he is also hoping to add to his goal invovement tally this season. The kid is only just getting started and with Pochettino only having good words to say about his performances on the training ground, Chelsea fans are eager to see how good he can become.
