A fiery game to secure one sides continuation into the Round of 16 results in Columbia progressing, courtesy of a Caicedo masterclass.
Both teams came into this game on joint points in the top half of the table, with Germany sat in the top spot on goal difference. After the Columbia Vs Republic of Ireland drama before the competition, Germany could prepare for the feisty side that they were coming up against.
The game started off lively for both sides, with Columbia almost finding the opener in the first ten minutes. A strong set piece and a great ball in allowed for Ramirez to get a head on it but it went just wide.
Germany are hit with an injury scare when Popp receives treatment following an elbow to the stomach, however she re-enters the pitch shortly after with no issue.
Columbia spent the first half pushing players forward and pressing Germany’s defence in a confrontational manner but it's stalemate as the teams leave the pitch at half time.
Great footwork and a curling goal into the top corner from Linda Caicedo saw Columbia open up the scoreboard at the start of the second half. The goal sparked incredible scenes on the bench with it sending Columbia up to the top of the table.
Caicedo has been a star player this game. Her ability to create chances and her skills on the ball have been vital for the Las Chicas Superpoderosas’.
An unbelievable miss in the last ten minutes of the game for Columbia as a great cross in narrowly misses the target with Caicedo not quite being able to get onto the end of it.
Germany are awarded a penalty which Popp takes and calmly slots it down the middle to equal the scoreboards.
But that isn't the end of the drama in this game. It comes in the 96th minute when Vanega finds herself unmarked in the penalty box and headers it home to secure their win. The players go wild and Columbia secure their place in the final 16.
For Germany to secure their progression, they will have to find themselves a win against South Korea.
