On Wednesday night, the WSL Champions extended their unbeaten run in the women’s champions league after beating Real Madrid, two goals to nil, topping the group stage table with nine points from a possible nine.
Emma Hayes made her return back to Kingsmeadow after six weeks out, due to surgery. We saw three changes from the winning side that beat Spurs three - nil at the Bridge, last Sunday, with Charles slotting in at right back to complete Chelsea’s back four, and Kaneryd coming in for James on the right hand side. The first half kicked off quite slowly, with both teams taking their time to get into the game, with equal possession between the two sides. However, it was ten minutes into the second half, where Chelsea really looked to go up the gears. It was in the 67th minute where Milly Bright just missed a header, from the penalty spot, leading to a Chelsea corner after Real Madrid keeper, Maria Rodriguez, palmed it away. From the corner, Erin Cuthbert in swings the ball straight onto Brights head, where Ingle can smash it away, to take the Blues into the lead.
The Blues struck again in the 75th minute with Erin Cuthbert coming up with a miraculous shot out of no where, sliding it in from the right hand side. The match ended 2-0 to Chelsea, and they now look ahead to their next WSL match, away at Leicester to kick start the Christmas Campaign.
