Charlton Athletic have finally announced the signing of highly rated prospect Jesurun Rak-Sakyi on loan from Crystal Palace. According to Charlton’s Director of Recruiting, Steve Gallen, the talented 19-year-old turned down offers from other clubs in League One and the Championship in favour of the Addicks.
The electrifying winger joins SE7 off the back of an incredible season. He was the Premier League 2’s joint-top scorer, netting 18 times for the Eagles as well as recording 5 assists. Additionally, he made his Premier League debut last year, coming on in a 3-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Later in the season, he was handed his first Premier League start by Patrick Vieira, in a 1-0 win over Manchester United. Quite the accolade for his age.
Whilst playing predominantly on the left-hand side, he will give Ben Garner options across the board as he can also play on the right wing, as well as being able to play in an attacking midfield role. Jesurun has described his playstyle as “really direct, taking players on, creating chances and getting assists.”
Ben Garner is looking forward to working with the young forward and is hopeful that “he can have a big impact this season.” A big part of Charlton’s allure for Rak-Sakyi was the manager and his complimentary style of football. “The manager likes to play out from the back, play through the thirds which is really suitable for me because I like to be on the ball as much as I can,” said Jesurun. Charlton Athletic owner and CEO, Thomas Sandgaard, had his say on the loan signing, stating “I’m looking forward to watching him play in our system.”
As well as this, Charlton’s respectable track record of developing loan players was a big part of Rak-Sakyi’s decision. Recent recipients feature Chelsea starlet Conor Gallagher who had a very impressive season for Crystal Palace and is now looking to make his mark in the Chelsea squad. Furthermore, Josh Cullen, Krystien Bielik and Ian Maatsen are all now solidified first team Championship players who recently enjoyed spells on loan at Charlton. Jesurun will be hoping to add his name to the long list of successful loans.
The Palace loanee has already featured in two training sessions for The Addicks and is fit and ready to go for Saturday’s tough fixture against Sheffield Wednesday. The Charlton boss will have a tough time naming his matchday squad as he is now flush with attacking options for the season ahead.
