Can Denmark cause shock at their first World Cup in 16 years?

As Denmark enter their fifth FIFA Women’s World Cup, as 13th ranked in the world, they will be looking to better their previous experiences and continue past the quarter finals. The Red and Whites most recent World Cup appearance was in 2007 where they could not progress through the group stages.

Denmark’s most recent result was a 2-0 loss against Spain this month. Although this could be demoralising, Spain are ranked 6th in the world and have a strong squad, so the Red and Whites shouldn’t be too disheartened.

The underdogs will be looking to shock the competition with a great campaign. To progress through the group stages, they will need to finish in the top two against England, Haiti and China. Although a challenge, Denmark do have what it takes to progress through the group, possibly in second place behind England.

A player to watch out for in this squad is newly signed Bayern Munich attacking midfielder, Pernille Harder. The Danish footballer has played at Chelsea from 2020-2023, winning the league every season she has been at the club, as well as also winning the FA Cup and League Cup.

Harder's goal tally is impressive, averaging out as a goal every two games at Chelsea, with 24 goals in 48 appearances. She is certainly a player who will cause a threat to the oppositions defence and will be key for Denmark to progress.

This competition will be manager Lars Søndergaard's last campaign as the women's team manager, meaning he will be even more hungry to go out on a bang. He took over following Denmark's progression to the 2017 Euro's final and will therefore be wanting to match that achievement, and if not, better it.

A disadvantage for the squad could be their lack of experience playing against their fellow group sides. Denmark haven't met these teams since 2019, which could cause issues with analysing their oppositions strategies and how to play against them.

16 years after their last World Cup, Denmark hold both young talent and experience, which will aid them to a strong outcome in this competition. Their positive recent fixtures against teams such as Japan and Sweden gives them great confidence and backs their hopes of bettering their last campaign. England are favourites to win the group, however Denmark have the talent to defeat China and Haiti and finish at second place in their group.
