Bruno Fernandes Brace Sends Portugal To The Knockout Stages

A big game was need for both teams as they look to progress further in their quests to reach the round of 16.

Portugal come off the back of an extremely demanding game against a very spirited Ghana side who almost picked up another shock of the tournament but the Portugese quality just shone and got the job done thanks to contributions from Ronaldo, Rafael Leao and Joao Felix. They sit top going into this game.

Uruguay come into this off the back of a extremely poor team performance which saw them draw against an extremely poor Korea republic side.

Portugal start off the game enjoying a lot of the ball and they seemed to enjoy a lot of possession with the ball but as they seem to do all the time they seemed to have very little quality in the final third during the 1st half of the game despite them having a number of of world class players.

But Uruguay had the only real good opportunity of the half after some good inter play saw Bentancur weave through the defence and had a shot which would have been one of the best in the tournament and if it wasn’t for the acrobatic saved from Portugal’s Diogo Costa.

However, in heartbreaking fashion saw Nuno Mendes go of injured and in tears which suggests that his hopes of participating any further in this tournament are over but we all hope he makes a full and speedy recovery soon.

But not long after this Portugal’s real quality had shown after Fernandes floated a ball into the box and it looked like it had came off Ronaldo but it didn’t and it went into the back of the net and put Portugal 1-0 up after poor first half performances from both teams.

Then Uruguay started again getting more opportunities through their starmen Luis Suarez and Giorgian de Arrascaeta which both saw them saved by Mendes yet again.

Then Fernandes earned himself a penalty after a shot hit Gimnez on the arm and after the Referee was instructed by VAR to look at the screen gave a penalty which Fernandes finished very well past Mendes to help seal all 3 points for Portugal and saw them go further at the top of the group with just one game to go.
