Billa’s first half header enough to see Austria through to the quarterfinals.

By Connor Wagner

Austria advance to the knockout stages of Euro 2022 as Group A runners-up after they beat Norway 1-0 at The Amex Stadium.

Austria had the first big chance of the match, after Feiersinger was able to fire a strike towards goal. Pettersen made a mess of the situation as she fumbled the shot onto the crossbar but was happy to see the ball bounce out to safety.

Next big chance would go Norway’s way, as Reiten ran at Austria’s defence, she found Hansen who was able to find some space, but her tame effort was wide.

Norway retained most of the possession, but it was Austria who would find the breakthrough in the 37th minute. Hanshaw was able to float a dangerous cross into the box, where Billa was able to meet the cross with a glancing header that beat Pettersen into the bottom corner.

The second half continued in the same manner, as Norway struggled to find a breakthrough where Austria looked as if they were going to score again.

Pettersen had a busy day, with saves from Billa once again and chances for Lisa Makas and Julia Hickelsberger-Fuller. Zinsberger only had two shots to save the whole game.

Austria advance into the knockout stages, they will take on Germany Thursday, as for Norway, the dark horses for the tournament. They are sent packing home until next time.
