A point each for both Italy and Iceland as they look to advance into the quarter finals of Euro 2022 but second is still up for grabs for all three sides.
Manchester City’s Academy Stadium was the venue for this game, and the game started brightly just three minutes in.
Iceland put themselves in the driver’s seat for a place in the quarter finals after Vilhjálmsdóttir was able to volley the ball into the top corner after a long throw from Jonsdottir caught out the Italian defence. Poor defending from set pieces has been a theme already in this tournament.
Iceland almost had a second after another set-piece error as the Italian defence failed to clear a corner, which fell to Vilhjálmsdóttir, but her shot was wide of the target.
A game of missed chances from both sides, with some rather sloppy defending throughout vasts periods of the game. Italy came out on top after the half and finally got their breakthrough.
Just over the hour mark and Bergamaschi was able to find the target for Italy. Her late arrival into the box stunned Iceland and was able to keep herself composed and slot the ball into the top corner, levelling the game.
The goal brought another gear out of Italy as they continued to halt the Icelandic’s in their path and kick on for a second. They almost found it after a counterattack in the 72nd minute but Girelli’s shot was watched all the way onto the post.
The final chance of the game fell to Iceland and would probably go on to cost them the extra points. Jónsdóttir was able to pull her cross to Vilhjálmsdóttir but the chance went begging as the game ended in stalemate.
The group is still wide open as France take on Belgium later in the evening, with all three teams looking to take second spot. All to play for going into the last game week for these nations.
