West Ham are about to play in the second leg of the Europa League against Freiburg on Thursday at the London Stadium.
David Moyes’ side have been on an up and down ride in the last 2 months but with the majority on their injuries being back plus they will be the home side it’s looking like another successful European game for them.
In the first leg at Stade Europa- Park, West Ham lost 1-0 but with the home advantage in the second leg plus knowing that in the group stage they beat Freiburg twice, both home and away. They will be very confident believing they will get through the tie. The Hammers only concern going into the game is European specialist, Emerson, is a doubt after coming off with a groin injury in the first leg and he was unable to feature in their Premier League draw against Burnley at the weekend. There is a chance he will be doing a late fitness test before the game to see if he can feature.
It is not the first time the Hammers are 1-0 down in the Europa League as they have been against Sevilla after losing at the Ramon Sanchez- Pizjuan Stadium. But, with the atmosphere and the way they played in the second leg they managed to turn the game around and win 2-1 on aggregate, so with this in mind I’m sure the players and the team are still very confident going into the game. There are also many players still at the club that featured in this game, including goal scorer Tomas Soucek.
A few standout players in the Europa League for the Hammers so far in the competition are Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paqueta and Ghanaian Mohammed Kudus. Paqueta has scored 3 times and 1 of these goals came in the away game against Freiburg in the group stage. He has also assisted 1 throughout the competition. For Kudus he has also scored 3 and assisted 1. An honourable mention has to be given to James Ward-Prowse as in his first season in European football he is on 4 assists from the group stages.
How far do you think the Hammers will get in the Europa League?
