Gunners Manager, Eidevall, led Arsenal to second spot in the Women’s Super League last season, falling just short of the title in a nail-biting last match day. This season he has a lot to prove, and what better way to do this than to consider the best players in the world!
Although Arsenal’s current squad resonates with an abundance of success, with Kim Little (skipper), Leah Williamson and Vivianne Miedema being just a few top performers to regularly represent the red army, following the end of all leagues around the world and the unforgettable Euro’s that has had us gripped over the last month, there couldn’t be a more perfect time to single out who would be a great addition to the gunners.
Alessia Russo- striker for England and Manchester United
That’s right, the back-heel goal scorer is first on the list! After an impressive game-changing performance from the second her boots touched the grass at the recent Women’s European Championship, Russo has become a household name. Alongside close friend Ella Toone, the two have consistently been referred to as super-subs, gaining their very own chant! Her direct running and eye for goal make her a threat to any defence, in which her style of play in the final third is regularly decorative- as highlighted through her different shooting styles. The red army already has an outstanding attacking player in dutch number 11, Miedema, meaning Jonas could use Sarina Wiegman’s, Lioness manager, strategy of creating Russo as a fresh legged super-sub to enhance the brilliant attacking display around the 60th minute.
Trinity Rodman- forward for United States and Washington Spirit
Does Rodman sound familiar? The daughter of famous NBA star, Dennis Rodman, has made her own impact into the sporting world, after a sensational rookie season in the NWSL. The 20 year old became the youngest player to ever go through the selection process, in which her age shows no boundaries. Speed, power and tenacity are all the fundamental qualities of a goal scorer, and all core elements of Rodman’s game. Not only has she got a natural ability to find the net, but also one to support her teammates in doing so too, as she was recognised to be the player with the greatest amount of assists last season in the National Women’s Soccer League. As someone who could be a great support behind current striker Miedema, her unpredictable movements could also create great harmony with the Euro’s 2022 player of the tournament Beth Mead. Both players adopt a shifting style, in which they float between the left, central and right sides of the attacking third. Mead’s experience would ensure Trinity’s off-ball movements are strengthened, giving the opposing defenders a headache! This could be the dynamic duo gooners didn’t know they needed.
Wendie Renard- centre back for France and Lyon
With frequent comparisons made to Virgil Van Dijk, arguably the best defender in the men’s game, Renard is the definition of a dominating defender. Her 6-foot-2 build means she’s there to protect her penalty area and there to finish set pieces in the attack end- overall she’s there when opponents don’t want her to be! Alongside England captain, Leah Williamson, her style of play could compliment the current Euro’s champion at the back. Both reveal great strength throughout play, which would create a hard wall for attackers to get through, creating an easier role for keeper Manuela Zinsberger. However, both these leaders have many similar attributes, which could mean certain areas aren’t covered in defence, so the dynamic may not be fully flourished. Who knows if we will find out!
With all season tickets already sold out, no matter the final announcement of Arsenal’s line-up, the pressure will be on!
